Black Nurses Report Racial Abuse from Nursing Home Residents

Several employees at the Elderwood nursing home, in Burlington, are speaking out about racial abuse, both verbal and physical, they claim was inflicted on them by nursing home residents. The Vermont newspaper Seven Days reported the employees said managers at Elderwood have ignored their complaints and have failed to take steps to protect them from the hostile work environment.

Five of the employees under attack by the residents are travel nurses “who come to Vermont for weeks or months at a time to fill key health care positions”, the article said. One nurse, who is Black, said she has worked throughout the country and has never before encountered such a work environment.
