COVE’s Community Education Programs

COVE’s workshop: “The Basics of State Government and How to Talk to Your Legislators” shows participants how to get their voices heard in state government. The workshop gives general and practical information on the functions of the three branches of government; how a bill becomes a law; who represents you in your district; current issues and interests; the workings of the legislature; how to find out what is going on in the legislature when it is in session; how to testify on a bill; how to communicate with legislators; and how to advocate for your needs and interests.

COVE organizes Legislative Forums around the state, primarily in the fall, with some held during the winter and spring. Presented in partnership with local organizations, these forums offer elders the opportunity to discuss their concerns with their state legislators in an informal setting. COVE also shares information about current and upcoming issues we have identified as affecting elders. In election years, we invite legislative candidates to the forums so that elders can learn where they stand on a variety of issues.

Kinship Caregiving: What is it, and how/where do I get support and assistance when I suddenly find myself raising my grandchildren because their parents cannot? Who can help me wade through that process?” This workshop will be led by grandparents who are raising their own grandchildren and who assist others through the Kinship Information Navigation Network.

“Safe Use of the Internet for Elders” – COVE/SMP Hands-on Workshop: This new member program offered by COVE and its Vermont Senior Medicare Patrol Program is funded by FairPoint Communications and Google. It will inform seniors about common internet scams, computer viruses and malware, and other suspicious electronic happenings. We are offering only 10 presentations to our organizational members. If you are already a member, just let us know you are interested in hosting this program and we will contact you with details. If you are not already a member but would like to participate in this program, you may do so by joining COVE. You will be supporting a good cause, as COVE has advocated for the benefit of Vermont Elders since 1981.
